Iplayed AC 1-4 when they came out and am getting back into the series before Valhalla comes out. I want to finish this, Origins, Unity, and
Skipit. The short answer is yes, you have to do a couple of side quests or locations to keep your level with the main story. On the other hand, most of the side quest are very cool, with nice and unique characters. Each mission have a different story, you can take decisions and gain gear or crew.
Assassins Creed Origins is still an absolutely gorgeous game, even more so on the Series X. Valhalla had enjoyable Mysteries but they are about equal to Origins' side quests in quality. Most importantly, 90% of Valhalla's side content involves samey, annoying puzzles of door locks/fire jars ad nauseum.
